Barriers faced by refugee women seeking work

The experiences of migrant and refugee women who have been granted leave to remain under the United Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA) legacy casework scheme have been documented in a report by a Manchester-based community research project.
The aim of the Legacy of Legacy Research Project was to focus on identifying the barriers that this group of women face in seeking employment and in accessing relevant public services, with a view to exploring the opportunities for using the Equalities Act to improve their situation.
The project was based within Rainbow Haven, a local community project which provides advice and support to asylum seekers, refugees and migrant workers in Manchester and Salford. Rainbow Haven developed this project because it had identified that legacy recipients, particularly women, face acute barriers that prevent them from accessing the employment market.
The project provided a unique opportunity for different communities to work together, as well as engage those who feel that their voices are not heard.
