The importance of values: Alex Whinnom's NCVO/GMCVO conference address

"Having very clear values, with careful definitions, is the essential moral compass that will allow an organisation and the people associated with it to take tough but right decisions on priorities, compromises and relationships at a time when it really does feel that the ground is shifting under our feet."

A comment from GMCVO's director, Alex Whinnom, and part of the address he delivered to a packed NCVO/GMCVO annual conference held at the Midland Hotel on 18th November. Alex's talk focused on putting the heart into Big Society, the choices we make and the values espoused by our organisations.
Sir Howard Bernstein, chief executive of Manchester City Council, also addressed the conference. He too spoke about the vital role of the voluntary sector in the new era, urging organisations to be clear about their priorities, to be more business savvy and to take advantage of the untapped workforce.
