Parliamentary praise for region’s voluntary sector

An early day motion (EDM) lauding the work of the voluntary sector in the North West was tabled by Lindsay Hoyle MP in the House of Commons on 4th March. The EDM (number 1011) reads as follows:
“That this House applauds the work and contribution made by the voluntary sector in the North West of England; notes with admiration the dedication and commitment of all those in the voluntary sector; believes that they are the unsung heroes working at the heart of our communities helping some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged in the North West; recognises the increased demand for the services and support provided by the voluntary sector during the economic downturn; calls on the government and local authorities in the North West to engage with the voluntary sector and provide any additional support to help voluntary organisations meet the demand for their services and to put in place measures to ensure the voluntary sector in the North West can grow and flourish for the benefit of all those in the North West, particularly those in greatest need.”
EDMs are formal motions submitted for debate in the House of Commons – although very few are actually debated. Instead, they are used to publicise the views of individual MPs, draw attention to specific events or campaigns, and demonstrate the extent of parliamentary support for a particular cause or point of view.
