Who are they?
Dynamic Support of Greater Manchester is a registered charity whose objective are to relieve or prevent poverty and distress in Greater Manchester and in Africa; to promote the benefit of BAME women and girls and their dependants; to promote good health and wellbeing; and to provide recreational facilities in the interest of social welfare.
The trustees and volunteers have extensive cooking and catering experience, and/or an interest in improving their catering skills. Dynamic Support therefore decided to create the trading arm SAWA BBQ to cook and sell African BBQ food. The income generated will financially support the parent company and provide new opportunities to the women and girls they support.
What do they do and why?
Dynamic support run activities to engage women and girls from the BAME community from across Greater Manchester in educational, cultural and skills-based activities. The aim is to reduce isolation, improve health and well-being and increase opportunities for volunteering that would improve their chances of employability and enterprise. Activities include traditional African arts/crafts/music, healthy eating, work skills (including catering), volunteering and English language.
What funding did they receive and how did it help them?
Dynamic Support received investment from GM Social Investment of £32,400 to help them set up the new business as a trading arm, SAWA BBQ Ltd and a small grant to commission a business mentor. The funds were used to purchase and equip a mobile BBQ van to cater at events across the North West. SAWA also provide catering at other people’s venues.
The SAWA BBQ project will enable them to train up to 30-40 women and girls annually in hospitality and the barbeque food industry. Skills/training include food hygiene, cooking, customer service, promoting food and opportunities to develop their English language skills. This will bring these women out of isolation and give them new skills in order to help them become financially independent and in a better position to take care of themselves.
“GM Social Investment has enhanced our catering skills and standards. It has empowered us to build the confidence of young women and girls from Dynamic Support to develop a catering business in a professional environment. It’s also enabled us to generate money and be more financially sustainable! Also, the finance brings a positive change to the wellbeing of these disadvantaged women and girls." Yvonne Edouke Riley, Chair – SAWA BBQ
What impact has the funding had?
SAWA BBQ is now more creative, more resilient, and more professional than ever before. The investment will allow SAWA BBQ to help sustain its parent, Dynamic Support of Greater Manchester’s activity in a sustainable way and increase the health and wellbeing of the women and girls they support.
