Recycle-IT! (Bolton) CIC

Bolton-based social enterprise, Recycle-IT!, recycle electronic waste with the aim of bridging the digital divide and promoting digital inclusion by redistributing items such as computers and IT equipment to the local community at low or no cost.

They received a £30,000 investment from GMCVO to grow their business and capacity.

Recycle IT!’s work diverts electronic waste from landfills, reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainability. They started the venture to address the growing issue of e-waste and the need for digital inclusion in their community.

By providing refurbished computers to those in need, they empower individuals, support education, and foster community development. Their mission also includes training people in IT skills, creating co-production opportunities, and becoming a worker cooperative, thus promoting ethical practices and community involvement.

They have been trading since 2021. They started by collecting electronic waste from various sources, refurbishing the items, and distributing them to the community through partnerships with organisations like Computer Aid International.

Looking to scale their operations, build their capacity, and enhance the impact on the community, they began to seek investment.

They discovered GMCVO and GM Social Investment through their network within the voluntary sector and recommendations from other social enterprises. They received an investment of £30,000 from the Proper Good Investment Fund. GMCVO were able to provide guidance and support throughout the application process. They helped refine their business plan, align their objectives with funding criteria, and navigate the necessary paperwork to ensure their application was robust.

Since receiving the investment, GMCVO has continued to support Recycle-IT! by providing mentorship, networking opportunities, and additional resources to help them grow. They have provided ongoing advice on best practices for managing their social business and maximising their social impact.

"Recycle-IT! has transformed our community by making technology accessible to everyone. Through our efforts, we've not only reduced e-waste but also empowered countless individuals with the tools they need to succeed in the digital age. Our journey as a social enterprise is a testament to the power of collaboration and commitment to social and environmental justice."

- John Hastings, CEO and Chair of the Board, Recycle-IT!
