GMCVO and the UK Data Service (University of Manchester) are hosting an online workshop about how voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations can use data to inform their work.
The free event will take place on 11th November, 10am – 1pm. Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the event is part of the UK-wide ESRC Festival of Social Science, an annual celebration of the contribution the social sciences make to society.
The VCSE sector enriches British social and civic life in many, measurable ways. Demonstrating this impact increasingly requires smart use of high-quality data. This interactive half-day workshop will feature practical examples from VCSE organisations about how different types of data have helped them with securing funding, understanding the economic and social environment they operate in, and producing evidence of the effectiveness of their service delivery.
- Sectoral data is sourced from the sector, for example: Charity commission data. How has funded been granted? How much money has gone to what sort of organisations?
- Service data comes from delivery organisations, for example: Service level data. Who uses the service? What are the demographics of service users? Why did they use the service? What are their needs?
- Societal data gives context to the work in the sector, for example: National survey and census data. What inequalities are experienced across the nation? What are the health, wellbeing and economic needs of your target audience?
Representatives from the UK Data Service and Manchester Metropolitan University will guide attendees through specific data sources that have potential for use within the VCSE sector, including the support and resources available through the UK Data Service. Participants will have the chance to explore some of these data resources themselves.
Case studies will be presented by Mark Wynn from HMR Circle and Thomas Wilson from Independant Age.
