A 2-day course that will give you a solid understanding of financial statements and of the 'language of finance' and how they are both applied within organisations

This course is recognised by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), but requires no assessment.
Recognised courses are a useful way to achieve learning in this important area without the time constraints of completing assignments (unaccredited but ILM certificated).

This course will introduce learners to a range of important principles, documents, methods and procedures involved in working with and presenting financial statements and information.

Who is the course for?

It is suitable for individuals who may be new to finance or would like to develop their understanding of financial statements further - learners may include those in groups new to management, finance staff, trustees/directors and social entrepreneurs.

The course objectives and learning outcomes are as follows: 

Day 1

  • Define the terminology associated with finance.
  • Prepare simple balance sheets/statements of financial position.
  • Prepare simple statements of financial activity/income statements.
  • Explain the need for adjustments to final accounts.
  • Explain and apply relevant accounting concepts.

Day 2

  • Calculate break-even.
  • Identify and explain margin of safety.
  • Explain the importance of contribution.
  • Prepare a simple cash-flow forecast.
  • Explain the value of variance analysis
  • Calculate accounting ratios.
  • Identify own measures of performance.
  • Describe the significance of Income Statements, Statements of Financial
  • Activity, Break-even, forecasts - including cash-flow.

Once you have completed the 3 days of training and more fully understand financial statements and terms you will be able to both read and explain the 'story' told by financial statements to your team and financers.
