Introduction to Management and Leadership Skills - Register Your Interest - April 2017

This 2-day ILM Recognised course is to assist managers and team leaders with skills and understanding to support good management practice in times of change.

We are gathering interest and finalising details and are advertising this course as a register of interest to begin with ~~final dates to be confirmed, once we get the minimum number of sign-ups to be able to run the course.

This 2 day course will run in April on two dates 'to be confirmed'.

This course is recognised by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), but requires no assessment.
Recognised courses are a useful way to achieve learning in this important area without the time constraints of completing assignments (unaccredited but ILM certificated).

Objectives: By the end of this course learners will be able to:

  • Define the core management skills necessary for a manager to be effective in a changing environment.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of self-management, staff management, communication skills and setting objectives.
  • Work as an enabler of good management practice in their organisation.
  • Demonstrate the relevance of both quality and equality commitments to good management practice

Content includes a range of core management skills and practices and is suitable for practicing or aspiring managers and leaders. This workshop covers defining management and leadership processes, styles and behaviours and conscious approaches for effective management and leadership practice.

Day 1 content:

  • What is management?  What is the role of a manager? 
  • Is there a difference between a manager and a leader?  Kotter’s definition
  • Historical context of management – when and where did it all start?
  • Detail on motivation McGregor and Maslow Theory X Theory Y
  • What makes a good(or bad) manager?  
  • What qualities does the effective manager have? 
  • What are the classic pitfalls or major problems of management? 
  • Personal skills and competencies analysis using Friedman and Rosenman questionnaire – Type A, Type B
  • What makes an effective team?  Problems with teams? 
  • Stages of Team Development. 
  • Leadership styles
  • Organisational culture of leadership
  • Action Centred Leadership 
  • The Leader / Manager as a role model
  • Your role in the development of your staff. 
  • Continuous Development the 'learning organisation' 
  • Tools of development Performance Improvement Planning, Coaching, delegation

Day 2 content:

  • Communication S–R model and the barriers to effective communication
  • Effective information management and communication
  • Communication and equality.  What is the manager’s role in relation to equality? 
  • Quality, what does it mean to you in your work role? - Quality exercise
  • Humber Bridge a practical exercise to form a frame of reference in relation to issues around management tasks i.e. financial, time, resources, planning, delegation, team work, communication, quality and equality. 
  • Developing policy and procedure to meet the ultimate mission/goal
  • Effective Planning method
  • The value of meetings – definitions and purposes of meetings
  • What makes a bad meeting?
  • Preparation prior to the meeting?  What value does this have?  Questions for effective contributions to meetings.  Decision-making and problem solving in meetings
  • What is change?
  • Types of change - what are personal experiences of the different types?
  • positive behaviours that help change  explain further
  • What are the connections with policy, procedure, quality, planning and change? 
  • Summing up and evaluation
