Assistant Professor Emma Dowling will discuss the ways in which austerity has exacerbated a deep-reaching care crisis.

This is the second in GMCVO's Academic Perspectives Lecture series

In her talk, Emma Dowling will discuss the ways in which austerity, marketisation and financialisation have exacerbated a deep-reaching care crisis. Where the UK government has been concerned with fiscal consolidation, new ways for private finance to address social problems and contribute to the production of ‘social value’ are being developed.

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and the recent government announcement of plans for a new ‘health and social care levy’, Dowling will explore the structural dynamics of the care crisis and discuss the potential and limits of current strategies to fix it.

Emma Dowling is Assistant Professor for the Sociology of Social Change at the University of Vienna. Previously she has held academic positions in the UK and Germany. Her most recent research asks what our economy looks like when viewed from the perspective of care, charting the material conditions that shape its configurations. She is the author of The Care Crisis - What Caused It and How Can We End It? (2021, Verso Books).
