GM Funders Forum briefing: The Impact of Emergency funding grants on small VCSE organisations during Covid-19

An online event for funders, including grant makers, social investors and public sector funders.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, funders - local and national - gave extensive funding to the VCSE sector to provide emergency support to communities in need. The VCSE sector stepped up to address this need and gave much needed support to people at a time when other services were not always available or appropriate. This resulted in a substantial number of previously small and micro-organisations scaling up their activity, delivering new areas of provision and increasing their income in a very short period of time.

At this briefing session for GM Funders Forum members, Marie Graham from GMCVO will present the findings from research into the impact that short-term emergency grant funding due to the Covid-19 pandemic had on small grassroots voluntary, community and social enterprise sector (VCSE) organisations in Greater Manchester.

This includes emergency grants for minority ethnic communities that GMCVO in partnership with the Manchester BAME Network delivered with funding from Comic Relief and NET, as well as the recipients of GM Mental Wellbeing grants funded by the Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership.

This briefing session will share and provide opportunity to discuss findings from this research, including:

  • The impact of this emergency grant funding environment on small VCSE organisations and the common challenges organisations faced,

  • What allowed organisations to successfully expand and cope with the added pressures this brought,

  • Support VCSE organisations need now to help them sustain services

  • Lessons learnt to inform future funding programmes

The GM Funders Forum exists to enable independent grant makers, social investors and public sector funders to collaborate and coordinate programmes. These regular briefing sessions are a chance for members and other funders to hear more about topics relevant to them.
