This month's GM Equality Alliance working group is dedicated to a discussion on Good Employment as part of this year's Good Employment Week. The focus of Good Employment week is Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and we will be having a detailed workshop focussed session to develop a set of key priorities to take back to our colleagues at the Good Employment Charter alongside the GM Equality Panels, which are also holding their own Good Employment themed sessions. As part of the development of the next Police and Crime Plan we are undertaking a ‘GM Partnerships Survey’.

This survey is being targeted at a range of roles and organisations (Police, Local Authority, Fire, NHS, Housing Providers, Criminal Justice partners, VCFSE and other stakeholders) that they would like to hear from as part of our consultation. They are particularly keen to hear from frontline practitioners within organisations to gain their insights and views.

The Inequalities Network Community Soup offers micro-grants for community groups and organisations to explore new ideas or trial projects focused on sport, physical activity and movement and inequalities.

GMCVO are delivering this grant programme on behalf of the Transpennine Route Upgrade to improve local spaces and services along its 70-mile route between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York. A total of £175,000 is to be distributed along the route, with funding available in the form of small grants (£1k- £5k) and medium grants (£5k - £20k).

In a brand-new report launched on 2nd September, The Alliance for Racial Justice, a coalition of leading race equality organisations, have called for equality laws to undergo major updates to tackle deep-rooted discrimination and inequality across Britain. In ‘A better way to tackle Institutional Racism’, The Alliance for Racial Justice calls on the UK’s new government to commit to a major review of the Equality Act 2010. Whilst a landmark piece at its inception, campaigners now believe this key piece of legislation has failed to safeguard against the spread of racism in the UK’s public bodies. This is in part due to a critical gap between the vision of the Equality Act 2010 and the ability for powers within the act to be implemented in practice

In January 2019, a five-year GP contract framework was agreed. This was intended to stabilise general practice, enabling it to become a key delivery vehicle for many of the commitments in the NHS Long Term Plan and to provide a wider range of services to patients.  In March 2024, therefore, the Department of Health and Social Care published arrangements for the 2024/25 period. These arrangements were not welcomed by GPs, and as a result, in April, GP leaders at the British Medical Association (BMA) formally entered into a dispute with NHS England over the contract changes. This explainer sets out the key elements of the contract arrangements for 2024/25 and potential implications for the wider health system.
