Understanding the role of voluntary
action in Greater Manchester

Good afternoon

We are excited to announce the second lecture in our online Academic Perspectives lecture series; a series which aims to link voluntary and community sector workers, practitioners and policymakers to academic ideas and evidence

Title: The Care Crisis.

Speaker: Emma Dowling, Assistant Professor for the Sociology of Social Change at the University of Vienna

When: Thursday 11th November, 4pm – 5pm

Where: Online (Zoom)

Dowling will discuss the ways in which austerity, marketisation and financialisation have exacerbated a deep-reaching care crisis. Where the UK government has been concerned with fiscal consolidation, new ways for private finance to address social problems and contribute to the production of ‘social value’ are being developed.

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and the recent government announcement of plans for a new ‘health and social care levy’, Dowling will explore the structural dynamics of the care crisis and discuss the potential and limits of current strategies to fix it.
