Exploring the social infrastructure that enables BAME communities to age in place.

Call for research project proposals

As part of Ambition for Ageing, GMCVO is seeking organisations with strong links into Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities and who can engage with the BAME-led organisations in the stated areas (see table 1) in Birmingham, Camden, Hackney, Leicester and Manchester.

Can your organisation:

  • Engage with specific BAME communities in one or more of the areas and encourage community members to take part in the study?

  • Interview BAME-led organisations to understand how they engage with members from their community and how this might have changed over time

  • Analyse the data from the interviews and present in a report about the communities in that area

We have already designed the research, we are looking for an organisation that has links with the target communities in the specified areas.

This research project is part of Ageing Better, a programme set up by National Lottery Community Fund to develop creative ways for people aged 50 and over to be actively involved in their local communities, helping to combat social isolation and loneliness.

There are 14 local partnerships delivering Ageing Better across England and 5 of these are taking part in this project: Birmingham, Camden, Hackney, Leicester and Manchester.

  • £10,000 is available in each area for organisations to deliver this piece of research

  • Projects will be delivered between July 2019 and October 2019

There are two parts to the research:

  • Part 1: Interviewing BAME-led organisations in the specified area to understand how these organisations engage with members from their community aged 50 and over and how this might have changed over time.

  • Part 2: Carrying out qualitative interviews with individuals aged 50 and over from the stated BAME communities to identify and explore the places, organisations and services they use for social contact and interaction

What makes a good place in which to grow older, for people who belong to minority communities?
