New online lecture featuring academic perspectives on voluntary action

In late 2021, we launched a series of online lectures that offered voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations (VCSE) a chance to step back and reflect.

The series aims to give voluntary sector audiences and policymakers an opportunity to step back from day-to-day concerns and think more broadly about topics and ideas that can inform everyday practice.

We believe that engaging with research can be both inspiring and useful in adapting our approaches and designing new ones. It can help us understand the underlying factors that cause issues to occur and guide us in our work.

We are excited to share the latest in this series of lectures, ‘Community wealth building in community-based economic development’.

On Thursday 27th April, Dr Gillian Murray, Senior Research Fellow at Yunus Centre for Social Business and Health, will cover the long view of community-based economic development since the 1970s, using historical insight to critically appreciate current practice and policy development on community wealth building.

In the UK, the ‘Preston Model’ of community wealth building has been highly influential and has had a direct influence on the development of a national community wealth building strategy in Scotland – with the Scottish Government planning community wealth building legislation in 2023.

Emerging research into its implementation in Scotland and historical research into Scotland community enterprise movement will provide insight into the long-term challenges of community-based economic development and to what extent community wealth building can address these issues.

Hosted online, this event will combine a 30-minute lecture followed by an opportunity to ask questions. It will be a great opportunity to explore new ideas and evidence conveniently from the comfort of your own computer. We hope you can join us.
