New project supports community buildings to install solar

Community Energy Greater Manchester was launched at the end of January, with an ambitious plan to give 20 community buildings solar rooftops. Funded by the Tudor Trust and Urban Community Energy Fund, the project is supported jointly by GMCVO and 10:10.

The project brings together a diverse range of community groups from across Greater Manchester including community centres, cafes, a gym, a garden centre, churches and enterprise centres with a collective solar installation of 198kW.

The first fundraising stage for Community Energy Greater Manchester will run until June, with a target of £50,000 to be raised by the community buildings. This will be followed by a public community share offer for those who would rather invest than donate. The installation of the solar panels is scheduled for July to September.

The solar rooftops will save the community groups money on their electricity bills and together we will develop energy efficiency and fuel poverty initiatives.
