Opportunity for VCSE leaders to participate in ‘Building Leadership for Inclusion Programme’

Greater Manchester public sector has made a commitment to recognise and respond to workforce race inequality and address these issues:

  • That you are 1.5 to 2 times less likely to get a job at interview if you are from a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) background

  • That you are 1.5 to 2 times more likely to be subject to a formal disciplinary if you are from a BAME background

  • That the distribution of BAME staff across our workforce and pay grades is not equitable nor representative of the communities we serve in public services.

To tackle Workforce Race Equality across GM, the GM Health and Social Care Partnership is developing programmes and interventions to change the experience and outcome for people from BAME communities in the workplace in GM. Whilst the initial commitment was a public sector one and certain areas of the work e.g. data collection against key workforce areas, is focussed on the public sector, they wish to broaden the offer where they can.

The Partnership is now recruiting to a new programme Building Leadership for Inclusion. They are looking for very senior leaders to take part in creating a community of senior leadership committed to collectively tackling workforce race equality.

We are aware that workforce race inequality is also an issue in the voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) sector.  The VCSE Leadership Group has made its own pledge to play our part in achieving Race Equality, see here.

We would like to recruit ten VCSE leaders, one based in each GM district, to take part in the Building Leadership for Inclusion programme.

Commitment required

We are looking at mid October start, and there are some reading materials and pre work that we will be sharing with the cohort beforehand. There will be access to online and digital resources.

No expenses are payable.

Activities involved:

  • 6 x half day sessions, dates below. These will be run virtually, and there is an expectation that to fully benefit from the programme, participants will attend all the dates.

    • 14th October – 9am to 12.30

    • 18th November – 9am to 12.30

    • 15th December – 9am to 12.30

    • 27th January  2021

    • 25th February  2021

    • March Date TBC

  • In between each session there will be smaller Action Learning Sets focussed on place and organisation. These will be facilitated locally with an aim of enabling leaders to process their learning, and put the ideas into action they are developing.

  • A final event at the end of March 2021, which will be online or face to face depending on the nature of the pandemic at the time.

Who are we looking for?

  • You are senior leader from the GM VCSE sector

  • You have an active interest in tackling workforce race inequality

  • You need not be from an ethnic minority; we welcome applications from leaders from a BAME background, but we recognise this is not your problem to solve

  • You will be open to learning and being challenged, and working with colleagues to develop new solutions beyond current thinking

  • You will be committed to supporting the broader VCSE sector beyond your own organisational interests.

  • You will be willing to share your learning with the wider VCSE sector by linking to your local infrastructure organisation, the GM VCSE Leadership Group and GMCVO. You will be supported to connect with relevant peers and colleagues to share your learning, and might be asked to provide a report
