Our Academic Perspectives Lecture series aims to link voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) colleagues to academic ideas and evidence, to give audiences an opportunity to step back from day-to-day concerns and think more broadly about topics and ideas that can inform everyday practice.
On Thursday 27th April 2023, we were delighted to hear from Dr Gillian Murray, Senior Research Fellow at Yunus Centre for Social Business and Health.
Gillian covered the long view of community-based economic development since the 1970s, using historical insight to critically appreciate current practice and policy development on community wealth building.
In the UK, the ‘Preston Model’ of community wealth building has been highly influential and has had a direct influence on the development of a national community wealth building strategy in Scotland – with the Scottish Government planning community wealth building legislation in 2023. Emerging research into its implementation in Scotland and historical research into Scotland community enterprise movement provide insight into the long-term challenges of community-based economic development and to what extent community wealth building can address these issues. The presentation concluded with reflections on the sustainability of community wealth building in Scotland and Preston.
The recording of the lecture is now available on our YouTube Channel. You can also view and download Gillian's presentation slides.
