Social enterprise

This page brings together GMCVO’s projects and services relating to social enterprise, as well as information about support, networks and resources for social enterprises and entrepreneurs in Greater Manchester.

How do we define social enterprise? We have adopted the definition developed by Greater Manchester Social Enterprise Network (GMSEN) - see it here.

Where can I find information about networks and resources for social enterprise? Read below and also go to the GMSEN website where we are gathering together information about networks, support, finance and funding and encouraging social enterprises to promote themselves on the social enterprise directory. You can also sign up for the social enterprise e-bulletin HERE for monthly emails sharing events, opportunities, finance and funding and news and publications.

GM Social Investment
Growing great ideas for good... Do you have a great idea for a business with social impact? Is your organisation already delivering social impact and you want to grow what you're doing or expand in a new direction? GMCVO offer loan finance for organisations who address social needs, strengthen communities, improve people's life chances, enhance culture or protect the environment.

Greater Manchester Social Enterprise Network (GMSEN)

We have been working together with others in social enterprises and social enterprise support organisations on the development of a Greater Manchester Social Enterprise Network (GMSEN). Alongside working on the early development of the network, we have been developing a GMSEN website, which was launched in spring 2017.

Greater Manchester AddVentures
AddVentures is a hosting and support service for small-scale community action and enterprise, providing another way for people to achieve positive change in their community, without needing to set up a new charity or company. AddVentures provides a shared legal and governance structure for social ventures that individuals or groups can simply ‘plug in’ to for as long as they like.

Lead the Change
Our Lead the Change programme was delivered in 2015/16 with funding from UnLtd and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. We awarded grants totalling £25,000 to 21 social enterprises alongside support and training to ensure each awardee had the best chance possible for success. The social entrepreneurs we funded have done some brilliant work and set up some inspiring enterprises which have already had a valuable impact on people's lives.
