Working for Us

Our values as an employer

GMCVO punches well above its weight due to the commitment, skills and teamwork of our staff. We know our diversity is a strength and to enable everyone to give their best we must accommodate their aspirations, needs and preferences, create a culture of understanding and respect, and actively challenge discrimination and prejudice.

Our day-to-day work is promoting social, economic and political inclusion and this includes the way we respect each other as colleagues.

Why work for us?

  • You will help reduce economic and social inequality – Greater Manchester has some of the nation’s most deprived areas.  Your work with us could support investment in community owned businesses, reducing social isolation or reducing economic, racial and age related inequalities

  • You can work flexible hours – as well as offering flexible working hours, we are willing to negotiate reduced and flexible hours where needed and where possible. As a carer friendly organisation we adapt our work to support colleagues with care responsibilities.

  • You can have flexibility in work location – negotiate how much you use our offices (close to Piccadilly Rail Station) or work from home.  We support agreed home working with the necessary IT, and furniture etc if needed.

  • You will be valued - Our Employee Representation Group plays a critical role in developing our practice and ensuring wellbeing is at the heart of our work

  • You will be supported - As well as support from your Line Manager, we also encourage staff to support one another, both within and across teams

  • You will have social interaction with like minded people - staff 'away' days, informal wellbeing drop ins and other social events are part of working here

What our staff say

“The flexible working arrangements available at GMCVO have always been a really beneficial part of working here but since I’ve been pregnant they have helped me even more. I’ve hugely appreciated the ability to work from home more around various appointments and to help ease pregnancy related back and hip pain.” Nathalie

“As someone who is a carer but who also has to work full time, there are inevitably occasions when I have to prioritise one role over another. Since joining GMCVO, I have received nothing but support and understanding for my situation from my colleagues and management alike. In addition, benefits, such as the ability to work flexible hours combined with an agreement whereby I can work from home when necessary, have made such a huge difference to my ability to manage my dual roles thereby reducing my stress levels, improving my mental health to ensure that I can remain productive in both the workplace and at home.” Kat

“Working at GMCVO has been a breath of fresh air after previous jobs. People aren’t afraid to ask colleagues for advice, guidance or support, and when something goes wrong it’s never about whose fault it is, but what we can do collectively to fix it and how we prevent it happening again.” Viki

“Deciding university wasn’t for me was a very difficult decision, but GMCVO welcomed me as an apprentice with open arms. I have already learned a lot of practical skills and feel like a part of the team, even after a short time. GMCVO is a friendly and fun place to work that is giving me the skills I need to progress in my career.” Tori

“My elderly mother, who lives alone, was suddenly admitted to hospital and had to have a major operation. She was subsequently diagnosed terminal which meant fortnightly hospital visits. This was a terribly distressing time for all the family, especially me being her next of kin. GMCVO were absolutely fantastic, allowing me to work reduced hours & occasionally working from home to support her. Had GMCVO not been as supportive I am certain that I would have had to give my job up to care for my mother.” Tanya

“Being an apprentice at GMCVO allowed me to develop my skill set by working across a diverse range of projects. Upon completion of my apprenticeship I was offered a permanent role and I have now been with GMCVO for over four years!” Lucas

“I have been at GMCVO for over ten years after having changed jobs quite frequently before. The reason I stay here is because over the years GMCVO has provided a challenging and stimulating setting for developing and growing. My job has never been boring and I have always had the sense that my ideas were valued and contributed to changing the way the organisation works. Having had many different types of jobs in different sectors before I came here I know that GMCVO is a unique place because of this” Susanne

"GMCVO's positive attitude to flexible working is crucial to me as someone with an Acquired Brain Injury. Even before Covid-19 restrictions I worked from home one day a week - that day without meetings allowed me to recharge my brain as I often find the concentration required for meetings intense" Gavin
