Creating age-friendly communities
in Greater Manchester

Good afternoon

We are excited to invite you to our upcoming seminar, delivered in partnership with Manchester Institute for Collaborative Research on Ageing (MICRA).

When: Wednesday 24th November, 2pm – 3:15pm
Where: Online (Zoom)
Speaker: Dr Jenna C. Ashton, University of Manchester

“You just don’t realise how important it is until it’s taken away”.

Losses of urban green spaces (e.g. parks) result in losses of health and wellbeing for older adults in local communities. This seminar will explore the complexity of loss as perception and lived reality in the city, and its implications for health and civic participation.

Research examples of destruction (or the threat of) to natural and built environments in Manchester raise questions for how change is managed, and how society is cared for at a local and policy level. Issues of grief, memory, connectivity, resilience, culture, and inequalities come to the fore, demanding loss be taken seriously within ageing-related research and practice.

Following Jenna’s presentation, there will be an opportunity for discussion and questions.
